rolling!

i don't have a lot to write, other than two days ago, hollis officially started rolling - both directions.  it's been a long time coming and now he's on the move, pivoting and scooting.  he's so proud of himself when he rolls from back to tummy.  i love it.

we've been dealing with intense bedtime/sleep drama with our little cardinal.  exhausting for everyone involved.  if anyone has ideas on how to make a bedtime routine last less than an hour and to help my child be calm and sweet when i tell her it's time for bed, please send them my way....

seven months.

my little wiglet turned seven months old on sunday.  we got to grab some pictures of him after a two+ hour nap, so he was in a great mood.  this photo shoot took place exclusively indoors because we are officially in the awful, too-hot-to-function part of summer.  silver lining is that it's already august and it's just now hitting, so maybe we won't have to deal with it for too much longer...

physical: i haven't weighed this dude since his doctor's appointment, but either i've gotten weaker or he's gotten heavier.  i'm estimating right around 20 lbs.  he is so chubby and soft and i could spend many hours gnawing on his knee rolls.

likes: eating!  hollis has really taken a liking to food since we introduced it a month ago.  he's eating three times a day - a cadence emme didn't hit until 9 months.  he loves almost everything, but especially butternut squash, aged white cheddar cheese, braised chicken, avocados, and pears.  i'm doing baby led weaning with him, like i did with ek, and he gets annoyed when i try to offer him something that's mashed up.  he loves the chewing motion and opens his mouth like a baby bird and tries to shove anything you offer in his mouth.  so cute.  he's still obsessed with emme and the two of them talking to each other brings me a lot of joy.  he loves wiggling and squeaking and he's constantly moving, if not actually going anywhere.  he loves singing and his sophie giraffe.

dislikes: lately, not much.  he doesn't like to be alone for too long - he is actually getting pretty content with floor time, but he prefers an audience.

biggest achievement of the month: teeth.  two teeth have made their presence very known in my life.  i'll leave it at that.  good thing they're super cute.

biggest challenge of the month: the past week or so, his afternoon nap has been a challenge at school.  really, he's just so alert and aware of everything now, i think he probably has a tough time settling down and getting the sleep his body needs.  we're working on a lot of things.

nicknames: all the same, i think.  blondie gets thrown in there on occasion now.

sleep: plowing through.  things are about the same here.  usually one wake up a night.  usually he goes right back down.  usually he's up around 6:30 for the day.  it's not awful, but man, i'd really love to get three straight nights of 8 hours.  in a row.

temperament/personality: hollis is a little lover.  he's a watcher and a cuddler and a giggler.  he's seriously so sweet.

eating: as i mentioned, this dude loves eating.  he still loves nursing, too.  and biting, but that's another journey he and i are on together.  but he loves being fed.  and we all love to feed him, too.  i can't tell if emme is more interested in feeding him or eating the little morsels i cut up for him (even though she has slightly bigger morsels of the exact same food), but it's cute whatever the intention.

superficial: still my little california baby.  still looks very much like a baby, which i just adore.

motor development: nothing super new to report here.  he's trying SO hard to roll onto his tummy from his back.  so hard.  he gets 3/4 there and then just gets frustrated that his arm is underneath him and rolls back. he loves to be propped to sitting, but doesn't appear to be super motivated to crawl or go anywhere, possibly because we all hover around him.

cardinals.

our little warbler became a cardinal yesterday, officially.  meaning, ek moved from the 18 month - 3 year-old class at her school to the 3-6 year-old class.  so crazy.  this is the class she'll be in until she goes to kinder or first grade, assuming we are still living in austin and it's feasible to get her to hawthorne.  it hurts my heart and makes me so proud at the same time.  she was a wreck when we dropped her off - she put her clothes and lunchbox into her cubby and tried to carry it into the other classroom.  but, when i picked her up in the afternoon, she was full of non-stop chatter and seemed to have had a great day.  she did say she doesn't like sleeping in cardinals and would rather sleep in warblers.  i'm hoping this doesn't impact her naps for too long because she is a girl that needs her sleep.  i'm also hoping the older kids i heard calling each other stupid yesterday don't influence her sweet disposition too much.
