cousin visit and work trip.

after school got out, we had a visit from the colorado cousins - justin's brother and his family. the kids absolutely adore each other and they all play together really well, so it was super fun to watch them all play so hard. i took pitifully few pictures, but it was a great weekend. we ate a lot - salt lick bbq, lick ice cream, chuy's for mexican food, i made jambalaya one night - and did some swimming and slip n sliding too. rose and i even snuck away for a quick yoga class.

the following week, in mid-june, i had to head to california for work for the whole week. i hate being away from my family, but cali was really nice and jb took great care of the kids. i'm pretty sure he wins for most likely to be goaded into getting ice cream or going for a weekday swim...

festival weekend.

last weekend we loaded up and brought the kids to lafayette for festival international. we missed it last year and it was awesome to be back, even though it was the most crowded i have ever seen it. the kids had a blast there, although i think the highlights of the trip for them were popsicles for breakfast, hanging with kk & jj & joe joe, and going to the dollar tree. jb and i even got to slip out friday and saturday night to see some music and peruse the crafts. we loved the bach lunch on friday, making masks at the children's area, jb and hollis dressed as twins, and squeezing in a nap during cedric watson. other than the insane rain we hit while driving back through houston, it was a fantastic trip!

while i was away...

some pics of ek at school. her teacher sent me these, letting me know she was missing me this week.

work travel.

i'm in california for work this week. it's a long week - i left at 6 monday morning and won't be home until late friday night. but it's been a good trip. i'm more revved about my job than i have been in a long long long time, and i've actually done a decent job sleeping and being social this week, both things i have historically struggled with during work trips.

it was hard to leave the kids this time, especially ek. she has been super delicate and fragile lately - very sensitive. i am not always good at handling it/knowing what to say to her when she gets upset about something. i tried prepping her a few days before i left so i didn't just leave in the night without warning, but i am not sure if this made it worse? she had anxiety about it from the moment i told her, especially the night before my departure. she even got out of bed about an hour after we thought she was asleep sunday night and came into the living room, teary-eyed, to ask me "who's going to be the mommy while you're gone?". my sweet girl. it's hard not to get frustrated at her hyper-emotional states, especially when they interfere with her sleep and hollis's (because sleep helps with the emotions, too - a catch-22). but i'm trying to be patient, encourage her to use her mindfulness tools, and breathe through it.

anyway. i'm ready to be home, in spite of the good week. i think we're going to go camping saturday night and we have a fundraiser for ek's school sunday evening that should be super fun too. i miss jb and those little mongrels.

thanksgiving in kansas.

november was an insane month with travel pretty much every weekend. shenanigans. it was super fun, but i feel like it will be mid-late january before we settle down from all the festivities.

anyway. we went to wichita to hang with jb's mom and the denver crew for thanksgiving. it was a super fun trip, capped on either end by trips to in-n-out burger in ft. worth, which the kids have termed forevermore as up-n-down burger. the weather was nice(ish) the first day we were there, so we hit up the park and went for a couple of walks in the wind. the next day and the rest of the trip, we got a TON of ice, so that made for lots of indoor time, but the kids had a blast chilling with their cousins, hide-n-seeking, drinking lots of hot cocoa, opening christmas gifts early, and watching movies in the basement. we ate all the things and i even did some knitting! no snow this trip, which was a bummer, but good family togetherness all around.
